The participation of autistic people is a human right, not an act of charity or mercy!
Currently, the landscape of child and youth welfare is dominated by providers that are not disability organizations themselves. They represent various interests at both state and federal levels. They offer a whole range of therapies "against autism." They call this self-help—for the parents. To "cure the children of autism." Many autistic adults are now clearly speaking out against this.
Studies on dialogue that autistic people consider dignified
Studies have shown that autistic people do not see themselves as sick or "affected" and do not wish to be labeled as such. Yet here again, decisions are made over the heads of autistic people; they are being disenfranchised, even at the federal level! In this context, a certain lobby is considered the representative voice of autistic people, despite having very few autistic adults in the association who welcome such titles or trends.
Particularly ABA
The majority of autistic adults even refer to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as torture – and rightly so. While the "re-education" of left-handed people has long been discredited, ABA uses instrumental and operant conditioning methods to strip autistic children of their entire natural behavior. The detailed position of White Unicorn e.V. on ABA is available for further reading.
Children learn very early: "I am wrong. I am only loved if I behave 'correctly'." Initially, the child shows the desired behavior, but only a few years later at the latest, the dramatic consequences of this brainwashing emerge – from self-doubt and depression to suicide, if other damage to body, mind, and soul has not occurred sooner.
Autismus Deutschland: "The lobby for parents of autistic children"
With this step, Autismus Deutschland has actively silenced the voices of autistic people – the very people they claim to want to help. Board members ridicule autism advocacy groups; prejudices and statements against autistic people characterize the daily interactions with autistic adults. The pathological view of "Autism Spectrum Disorder" dominates their public image and "support services."
In doing so, Autismus Deutschland discriminates against all autistic people, including us. We are autism. White Unicorn e.V. is publicly participating in this campaign to draw attention to the fact that autistic people can and should speak for themselves. We are a physiological component of human existence; we are different; we are healthy diversity.
Boards "in dialogue"
Autistic people are laughed at by the boards of these organizations when they say they can speak for themselves or actively contribute to Universal Design. It is not uncommon for such autistic people to have their diagnosis denied because – according to the established opinion – autistic people cannot be independent, live, think clearly, plan, or judge for themselves.
We are autism.
We autistic people speak for ourselves; we expect to be talked with instead of about. Especially in the creation of a Universal Design as part of diversity!
